The History Of The Magazine Advert

In my brief overview for the Digi-Pak, I began by defining what a Digi-Pak was so I'll do the same for the Magazine Cover.

OK ... Let Me Think ... Define: Magazine Advert (I didn't really type that to Google ; )

Well, I guess its all in the name. A Magazine Advert is a form of communication that aims to encourage/entice potential customers to purchase or consume a product. In this case the magazine advert I would create would encourage individuals to buy the new 4FLAVA single - 'Untouchable'. More to the point it promotes the band/artist as well as the song. And that's exactly what I'm gong to do. With the right equipment, technology and everything else I am going to create a magazine cover.

I dont want to get too ahead of myself and research too much about the Magazine Adverts because I'm sure Mr. Johnson has a list of things he want us to cover. But I hope after reading this post you know and understand what a Magazine Cover. If not, you can also type it in to Google = )

True To My Word

The Christmas holiday - just CHILAXING! True to my word I am going to do some research doing this Christmas break. As part of the project not only do I have to create a Music Video but I also have to make a Magazine Cover and Digi-Pak. Considering I have already given a brief overview about the Digi-Pak I think its only right to give a brief over view about Magazines.

We Wish You A Merry x3 And A Happy New Year.

At last the Christmas Holidays have arrived. Although its the holiday I am going to research information about the Digi-Pak and The Magazine Cover. Before I go today I'm going to ask Miss Thompson to look at my Music Video and give me some advice. Even if its a criticism I going to take it on the chin because I need all the advice I can get.

After looking at the video so far Miss Thompson's verdict is...
  • It looks really good so far
  • I think there needs to be more cuts
  • To show a change in the three location maybe you should use a transition or even create scene whereby the cast are moving over to the next location.
  • I can see that you have captured aspects of the Pop, R'n'B and Hip Hop Culture this shows that I have good knowledge and understanding in the research area of the coursework.
  • The extra cast used in the club scene as well as their costume and make-up used on them doesnt look professional. In order to follow the genre of the type of music video you are trying to take I think this should be changed.
I've been able to take this on board so I guess after the holiday I'm going to do some work on that. I'll still be thinking about any changes I could make once I get back.

Anyway seen you soon.

Lost Without You

Its been 1 week since Mr. Johnson left us to go on jury service. Although he has left us with some work today the world of media and film studies is not gonna be the same without him. It might not even work. Well, all we can do is try our best - do as much filming and editing as possible. Well I hope you enjoy your time on jury service and I guess I'll see you after Christmas.

Although this may seem a little CHEESY but I thought that it would be a good idea to use song titles for some of the posts. Didn't you realize from my previous post titled '2 Become 1' and 'Goodbye'. These songs both had music videos attached and featured the most famous girl band over the last 10 years - SPICE GIRLS. As I'm making a girl ban music video I thought it was relevant.

This time round I've used Robin Thicke's - Lost Without You. Although a love song I think those three words show that if Mr. Johnson is not there media studies doesn't really go according to plan or function as well : (

Robin Thicke - Lost Without You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DdCoNbbRvQ

This song is not a literal description of how I feel I just felt it relevant to add a music video that relates back to the coursework as well as the post.

GET IT, GOT IT, GOOD ; )

Editing Problems

I started editing my video only to find out that the clips are too long. In order to resolve this I have tried several techniques. I have copied and pasted a long clips making sure I have two of the same clip then split the play head on one off them. Although I took this approach the the clips did not match the upbeat/tempo of the track so this was a no go!

My second technique was the old fashion way which was to go out and film again ensuring that I film from different angles. Considering I had filmed already I just had to ask the singers/dancers to repeat the verses so that I can get different shots and angles. To be honest I should have thought of this before it would have been much easier. Anyway one thing I have learnt about filming is that you learn through trail and error!

Lip Syncing Problems

The problem starts here. As you know I have started filming and now I have to import the audio (track) on to the video file and edit the lip syncing according to the video. This process has not been to bad for me because my singers have memorised the song and made sure that everything is in the right place. In order to make it easier I have also written down the time that each clip should be placed.

Desperately Seeking Extras

One of the scenes I would like to create in my music video is a club scene. In order to achieve this I need to find the appropriate location, props, costume, make-up and most importantly the right people in order to create the clubbing atmosphere. Getting the extras for my music video was my next challenge. This was difficult because there were times when I would have a lot of people and times when I would have no people at all. In order to make this official I decide to create a poster and PowerPoint slide that ill be given out to all form groups in my school. after publishing the Health and Safety Regulations I had to bare in mind that if any students were under the age of 16 they had to get permission from their parents. In addition, I also had to ensure that a responsible adult (teacher) was able to supervise myself and the other students while filming. Once the poster were up and I'd received permission from form tutors and parents the filming was ready to go.

Risk Assessment

RULES & REGULATIONS PROMOTING HEALTH & SAFETY

No filming in inappropriate locations

Check safety of locations e.g. roads

Minimise risk of theft of equipment

When filimg on location ensure that teacher/ responsible adult know where you are and have you telephone number and when you return.

Check all equpiment is leaving before/after you leave

Ensure you have permission for filming if necessary

A;ways film with at least one other person

Ensure you have the permisson

Check List

We have finally been given a check. I don't blame sir for not giving it to us earlier because he has had so much to do with the IMAC's. The checklist is a simple guideline which is used in order tomake sure that we meet the requirements of the exam board in oreder to get the highest grade. The list if items (tasks) on the checklist must be met. These tasks include the following:

  • Introduction - Breif
  • Research & Planning - Planning, Filming ( 20 marks)
  • Analysis Of Finished Video - Film Language, Critocal Theory
  • Construction - Demonstrating use of Mise-en-Scene, Editing, Camera Angles/Shots etc ( 60 marks)
  • Evaluation ( 20 marks)

In Working Order

A few weeks ago the IMAC's were unable to save our work therefore if any editing took place it would have been pointless. Now is all the clear. We have been aocated a group number. The group number allows us to succcessfully save our work into folders. Which is a GOOD thing. The BAD thing is the fact that other individuals can change or delete your work as they will also be saving their work in the same folder as you. I hope I dont face no problems like this. I hope I share my folder with someone I can trust.

Animatic

An animatic is a storyboard of graphic images or illustrations organised in a sequence that shows a motion of clips.

Theres More To Media Than Meets The Eye - Feminisit Film Theory & Audiences

After the lesson on Feminist Film Theory and Audience the only thought that came to my head was that there is more to media texts tat meets the eye. The post below will explain why.

  • Laura Muluey
  • Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (1975)

Steps

  • Cinema reflects society
  • Therefore cinema reflects a patriarchal society
  • How is the patriarchal society manifested (portrayed) in the films/cinema we consume

Example

  • Patriarchy and phallocentrism and linked.
  • Phallocentrism - the world of the male penis
  • The phallus is the symbol of power
  • Guns = phallus = power

The Gaze

  • The 'gaze' of the camera is the male 'gaze'
  • Male gaze - active; Female gaze - passive
  • Within the narrative males characters direct their gaze towards female characters.
  • The spectator (audience) is made to identify with the male look, because the camera films from the optical, as well as libidinal, point of view of the male character
  • Thus the 3 levels of the cinematic gaze - CAMERA, CHARACTER and SPECTATOR - that objectify the female character (the triple gaze)
  • Therefore the audience is constructed as though everyone was male
  • Women are forced to look as though the were a male audience member

Agency

  • In classical Hollywood cinema the male protagonist has agency - he is active and powerful
  • He is the agent around whom the dramatic action unfolds.
  • Female character is passive/powerless - she is the object of desire for the protagonist and audience

Erotic Desire

Muluey argues that women have roles in film:

  1. As an object of erotic desire for the characters.
  2. As an object of erotic desire for the audience

An example of this can be seen in both James Bond Dr. No and Die Another Day

Suture

Classical Hollywood narrative and editing 'sutures' or positions the audience in certeain ways making only one preferred reading possible, however unconscious the audience of the position.

The History Of The Digi Pack

A Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging. Digi-Pack-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Since the packaging is less durable than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly

Digipaks usually consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Digipaks are the first answer to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, The term Digipak or Digi-Pak is used, when the media holder is the focus or ‘Soft Spot’ rather than a full plastic tray. Greater

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Due to the fact that there less risk of the CD/DVD being scratched, than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed Digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, ensuring that it lasts longer.

Although, it seems that there is less at risk of cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package (particularly the "teeth" of the hub which secure the disc in place) remains rather brittle and is prone to cracking if the package is crushed. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.

Manufacturers have asked to reduce environmental impact and improve functionality by introducing recycled components into its trays; one has announced a 100% post-consumer PET tray made from recycled bottles, which also eliminates the need for the brittle "teeth". Many printers use recycled or sustainable material for the board stock.

Historically, Digipak was only available in large quantities. However, AGI has recently introduced a new product called Digipak I-Create for the consumer market. Digipak I-Create is a web-supported concept that is aimed at the download, music, photo and creative markets.

Half Term

It has been along time since I visited the Blog, in fact it has been over a week. But I have a valid excuse, I have been working at the BBC - this is not the place where I should be telling you happened. Although its the half term I have done some research into the Digi Pack and Magazine Cover.

Anyway, I'm back to school on Monday continuing the filming for the video so I've got to love you and leave you.

From CD Cover And Webpage To Digi-Pack And Magazine Cover

From CD Cover & Webpage
Today we had a talk about the second part of the coursework whereby we must increase the sales and promote our Music Video. In order to do so we must create a media text to go alongside the video. After reading the syllabus Mr. Johnson decided that we create a CD Cover and Webpage. Therefore we would use programmes such as Photo Shop along with our creative ideas to create these products. Due to the fact that creating these two products will mean learning two new programmes along with getting to grips with using the Cameras and IMovie Mr. Johnson thought that we should scrap this and therefore created another invention. (As a class we all agreed because as students we all want less to do)

To DigiPak & Magazine Cover
To make life easier for ourselves, the class as well as Mr.Johnson decided that we create a Digipak and Magazine Cover. Therefore all we had to do is learn and understand how to use 'Photo Shop' - which is great for people like me who find it hard to learn new things although once taught, is a PRO.

Well its going to be a challenge but I look forward to it!

Filming - The Street Scene

It has been along time since I have done any filming or rehearsals but now I have started again it is going well. I have started filming the new scene. Previously this was going to be the skate park but I have changed this due to weather conditions which in fact have got better. In order to stick to the theme I wanted create I have decided to shoot the scene in a basketball court. Although this is not going to look as good as I pictured it, it will still make the cut for the video.

Problems

As you may know I have made a start on filiming my music video. A few problems have risen due tothe fact that I am also featuring in others videos. In addtion some individuals who feature in my video hvae their own video to complete. I am unabl e to edit my music video due to saving errors that occur on the IMac computers. Once this is resolved I am going to undergo this process and edit the video into a sequence. For the time being I am going to continue filming my video.

2 Become 1 and Goodbye - Spice Girls

When writing this post, I was thinking 'All The Single Ladies' but then I found a more appropriate title. Spice Girls ' 2 Become 1' and 'Goodbye'. Although a love song, I can relate it to my work. I have lost a dear friend Pui-San. Due to complications Pui-San had to leave the group but the feeling is mutual ... at least thats what she thinks. Just joking. Although not there in person she is there in spirit.

Before I go here's a video for you and it's actually good. Placing singers in the middle of locations and adding editing e.g. zoom in and outs to create an effect.

The video Goodbye shows some kind of storyline of friends being lost and finally find each other. Storylines in a music video are good concepts to take.

Receptive Theory

  • Due to the limitations and problems of the Effects and Gratification a different approach was taken o audience by Stuart Hall in 1970's.
  • The theory states that texts were encoded with meaning by producers and decoded (understood) by audiences. E.g. Watch NSPCC ads whereby we need to help the needy

The theory suggests that ...
  • A prouder constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey to the audience.
  • In some instances audiences will correctly decode the message/meaning and understand what the producer was trying to say.
  • In some instances the audience will either reject or fail to correctly understand the message.
Stuart Hall identified 3 types of audience readings (decoding) of the text:
  1. Dominant
  2. Negotiated
  3. Oppositional
Dominant
  • The audience decodes the message as the producer wants them to do and broadly agrees it.
  • E.g. Watching a political speech and agreeing with it. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA

Negotiated
  • Where the audience accepts, rejects or refines elements of the text in light of previously held view.
  • E.g. Neither agree or disagreeing with the political speech or being disinterested.
Oppositional
  • Where the dominate meaning is recognised but rejected for cultural political or ideological reasons.
  • E.g. Total rejection of the political speech and active opposition.

Receptive Model Diagram

Gratification Model

  • It is clear that there is any link between the consumption of violent media texts and violent imitative behaviour.
  • It is also clear blue theory is flawed in that many people do watch violent texts and appear not to be influenced.
  • In doing so another theory is created - this is known as 'The Use & Gratification Model'.

The Uses & Gratification Model

The theory is opposite to the the:

  • Effects Model
  • The audience is active
  • The audience uses the text and is NOT used by it.
  • The audience uses the textfor it's own gratification or pleasure.

Here the power lies with the audience NOT procedures.

  • The theory emphasises what audience do with media texts/
  • How and why they use them?

Audiences therefore use media texts to gratify needs for:

  • Diversion
  • Escapism
  • Information
  • Pleasure
  • Compare relationships and lifestyle ones own.
  • Sexual stiulation

Audience is in control and consumption of the media helps people with issues such as:

  • Learning
  • Emotional satisfaction
  • Relaxation
  • Issues of personal identity
  • Issues of social identity
  • Issues of agression and violence

  • Contriversailly the theory sugguests that the consumption of violent imagescan be helpful rather thanharmful.
  • Audiences also act out the impulses and release the feelings through the consumption of media violence.

Audience inclination towards violence is therfore sublimated, and thay are less likely to commit violent acts.

The Effects/Hypodermic Model

*This is related to the Audience Theory*

Effects Model
  • Consumption of media text has an effect/influence the audience.
  • Negative effect
  • Audiences are powerless (can not help) to prevent the influence. *Passive*
  • The power lies in the message of the text - no matter what we can't do nothing about it

Hypodermic Model

  • Messages in media texts are *injected* into the audience by the powerful, *syringe0like* media.
  • Audience is powerless to resist.
  • Media works like a drug and th audience isdrugged, addicted or duped (fooled).

Evidence Of Effects Model - Bobo Doll Experiment

Contriversal piece of research that children copy violent behaviour conduted in 1961 by Albert Bandura.

In conlusion the experiment demonstrated how children will imitatae violent media content. Many problems with the experiment:

  1. What do you think are the flaws with the moethodology?
  2. Does it indeed prove that children imitate violent media content?

Key Examples of Media Texts that contribute to violence include:

  • Childs Play 3 - viloence projected/shown in the murder of James Bulger in 1993

  • Manhunt - resulted to the muder of Stefan Pakeerah in 2004 by friend Warren LeBlanc.
  • A Clockwork Orange (1971) in a number of rapes and violent attacks.
  • Servance (2006) murder of Simon Everitt.

In each case it was found that NO case could be proven to demonstrate a link between the text and the violent acts.

Changes

There have been alterations made to my video due to disagreements within the group. Previous band member and dancer Maureen has left . As a result I have decided to have only three memebers within the group and three backing dancers. It happened to Destinys Child and it happened to me, I actually feel privilegde!

In addition I have also decided not to use the skate park as one of my locations. This is due to the fact that the weather conditions have bhanged since my initial ideas and have got worse.

Any other changes made to the video will be posted.

Rehearsal 2 - The Gym Scene

I was looking so forward to the next rehearsal but then it goes pear shaped when we are told that the booking we have made has been canceled and we have to wait until 4pm. In order to kill time we decided to go over the dance moves as well as the verses the dancers will be singing.

We were so excited to begin shooting the video. Our first scence of the video is located in a dance studio. It is so perfect for my video and I cant wait for it to be all over. In order to ensure that I get the right shot I have asked the dancers to repeat the actions so that I can get different shots in different angles. This therefore allows me to choose from range of different clips.

Rehearsal 1 - Lets Get It Started

'Let's Get It Started' by Black Eyed Peas.

Our first rehearsal was hetic but we got there in the end. To make it easier I sent the dancers and singers the track via their mobiles. In addtion I gave them a copy of the lyrics so that they could learn the words. Patience one of the dancers really likes the song and was able to pick up the words easy. As we got going, everyone was able to sing along.

After a while I decided that it would be a good idea to allow each individual dancer to add a single dance move into the music video. Although some difficulties had risen through this process due to the fact that some people were unable to meet the dance move changes were made we came together with a good dance sequence.

Our dancer include Patience, Shaunica, Dionne and Maureen.

Stage 5 - Live Shows

Here is where we start to do the making of the music video. Im sure this will be the videos of all videos. I hope it makes the charts of Music Videos of Robert Clack Media. Throughout the 'Live Show' process I will provide you with rehearsal videos and pictures of the bands progress. So stayed tuned and watch out for the up and coming video of 4Flavas - Untouchable.

Audience Theory

The three theories of audiences tha we can apply to helps us come to a better understanding about the relationship between texta and audience.
  • Effects Model or Hypodermic Model
  • Uses and Gratifications Model
  • Reception Theory

Questions to Consider

  1. Why do audiences choose to consume certain text?
  2. How do they consume texts?
  3. What happens when they consume texts?

Legal Documentation - Lyrics Confirmed

After that long wait and sending two e-mail's I haven't received the lyrics. I've asked sir what to do and he said, 'Well you can listen to the song and write down the lyrics'. I just nodded when he said this as if to say, 'yeah sure, thats exactly what I'm going to do'. Then all of a sudden a light came on in my head. 'Why don't I see if its on google', and thats what I did. Went onto google and typed in 'Untouchable' by 4Flava Lyrics. I crossed my fingers and prayed, the resuts came up and there it appeared like a gift from God the lyrics, staring straight at me. I clicked the link copied the lyrics and 'Bobs Your Uncle'. I didn't think the lyrics would be anywhere considering the band is not mainstream.

The following link will direct you to Untouchable Lyrics by 4Flava

Research - Costume & Make Up

Due to the fact that I have decided to use several different locations for the dance video I believe that it will be effective to also change the costume of the dancers as the locationns change. This willl ensure that I am taking into consideration the style of music. Previous resaerch shows that costume chamges have been made to suit the mood of the music as we change location or from verse to chorus of via versa.

Meet The Cast

As I have decided to create a music video for a girl band, it is important that I portray the band as much as possible. In doing so I have asked my close friends to feature in the video.

Although there are only three cast members against the bands four members I believe that I can still pull it off. Its not QUANTITY its QUALITY! REMEMBER ; )

Research - Location/Setting

Due to the upbeat tempo and genre of the track I believe that the location of the music video should be in a dance studio, skate park or generally focused in an urban area. Music videos that have incorporated this look include:

  • Jamilia 'Superstar'
  • Avril Lavigne 'Skater Boi
  • Destinys Child 'Lose My Breath'

In doing, tyhis allows the dance sequence, costume and make up and other aspects of Mise en Scene complement the music video.

Research - Dance Sequence

The song I have chosen for the music video is upbeat with a combination of R'n'B, Hip-Hop and Pop. In order to complient this I feel as though the video I create must have a dance sequence. In doing so this will also show how I have been able to intergrate my research or past, present and up and coming girls into the video.

A video that inspires me to add a dance sequence into my music video is Cheryl Cole's 'Fight For This Love. This is because the the dance sequence is focused upon the main artists and the dancers. In addition the location of the dance sequence is bright which complements the dance moves and the music genere. It allows audiences to see the intricate dance moves. Other aspects of Mise-en-Scene that entice me are the costume and make-up of the artist and the dancers. The dancers all wear the same costume and make up. In order to make the main artist stand out she wears something different.

Other dance sequences that inspire me are:

  • Pussycat Dolls - Beep
  • Destiny Child - Lose My Breath
  • Cassie - Long Way To Go

100 Greatest Hits - The Final 10 - Part 6

*NOT ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

9 - Madonna - Vogue - 1990. Both video of this song reflects the New York life.

8 - Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathney - 1991

7 - Micheal Jackson - Billie Jean - 1983. This video tells the story of a women who claims that Jackson has a baby with her. In the song Jackson states that 'Billie Jean is not my lover, shes just a girl who thinks that I am the one. But the kid is not my son'

6 - Robbie Williams - Rock DJ - 2000. This video had to versions. One of which is the uncut version. In the uncut version we see Williams undressing himself right through to his skin, flesh and organs.

5 - Madonna - Like A Prayer - 1989. In the video Derice Bannock plays a black Jesus. This was a contriversial video due the the chracters that appeared in it. The video showed religous elements/grounds across reality and fantasy.

4 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 1975.

3 - A-Ha - Take On Me - 1983.

2 - Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel - 1986.

100 Greatest Hits - Part 5

*NOT ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

24 - Radiohead - No Surprises - 1998. The video focuses on Tommy York's face as his lip syncs the lyrics of the song. In order to complement this the lyrics of the song scroll down on a glass window. In doing so this has produced a sense of meaning and purpose for the video. Therefore adding value to the song and increasing video sales.

22 - Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River - 2003. Prior to this video was Britney's 'Baby One More Time'. Justin's video reflected his break up with Britney. In doing so he casts a Brinety look-a-like to be feature in the video.

19 - Madonna - Material Girl - 1985. This video followed in the footsteps of Marilyn Monroe in her movie 'Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend'. However, Madonna's reasoning behind this video was due to the fact that the director of the video was fond of her and continued to give her material gifts - for the 'Material Girl' in a material world.

16 - Outcast - Hey Ya - 2003. Andre 3000 played each character in the band featured in he video. The video portrays how the musical life was like in the 1960's.

12 - Micheal and Janet Jackson - Scream. This was a controversial video as brother and sister deal with the media and the press. In addition this is the most expensive video to date costing approximately $7 million dollars. This could be due to the fact that guitars were being smashed and its effective visual imagery.

100 Greatest Hits - Part 4

*NOT ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

49 - Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity - 1996. This video dominated the awards as it collected Best Video, Cinematography and Breakthrough. After watching the video again the awards were well deserved. The trick shots in the video worked well.

47 - Adam and the Ants - Price Charming - 1961. I have heard the song but not seen the video. To be honest I was happy just listening to the song. I can see that directors, producers especially costume and make-up had a lot to do with the making of the video. I wasn't shocked to hear that the video cost £30,000.

42 - Bjork - Its All So Quite. I remember when I used to dance to this song and perform as though I was on stage. Only to find out that the track was a celebration of all musicals. I wasn't a fan of the video.

35 - Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares To You - 1995. How ironic as I type this up I'm listening to the track on Magic FM. When I first heard this track I was actually listening to Magic. I was inspired by her voice so when I got home I watched the video and read the lyrics of the song. Although there is no dancing in this video it has captured many audiences. This is mainly due to the close up of Sinead crying. I later find out that Sinead was emotional after think about her late mother during the filming of the video. This deserves a spot on the countdown.

31 - Emienen - Stan - 200. This video followed one of Eminen fans road to death. It also introduces Dido the featuring singer as well as character in the video. Both the video and lyrics go well together and tell a story.

29 - Electric Six with there contriversal track Gay Bar (2003). The video reflects the sexuality of the once president of the United States Abreham Lincon.

26 - TLC - Waterfalls followed the dangers of unsafe sex. However in 3d special effects.

The Video Music Awards - VMA's 2009

Last week hosted by Russel Brand (again) the VMA's was on. Considering I'm doing a Music Video I thought this would be a great chance to see which artists/bands win the prestigious awards.

The opening of the show was a tribute to the late great, king of pop Micheal Jackson. The tribute came to together as a group of professional dancers created a montage of Jacksons infamous dance moves and tracks. This was followed by a performance from Janet, whereby she danced to along with the Scream video which she and her brother featured in.

The first award went to Taylor Swift for her video'You Belong with Me' as the 'Best Female Video'. Its good for her to nominated but not to win I believe that there were other nominee's for this award such as Beyonce and Nelly Furtado. However, congratulations Taylor for you first VMA Award.

The 'Best Rock Video' was appointed to 'Green Day - 21 Guns'. I'm not a fan of the songs but I guess its not about the song it's more about the video. I enjoyed the other nominee's songs rather than their video (Kings Of Leon, Paramore and Fall Out Boy).

Lady Gaga the had an amazing performance with her track 'Paparazzi'.

Best Pop Video was given to 'Britney Spears' for her track 'Womanizer'. Although she was on tour and unable to receive the prize, I suppose this pop princess/diva deserve this award. She's been through alot.

After receiving their award Green Day performs. They rock out.

The time came and Beyonece performed her track 'Single Ladies'. I must admit I was expecting more but she still claimed the stage.

'T.I featuring Rihanna' won the award for 'Best Male Artist - Live Your Life'. Although he was also absent from the show his video told as story. If was a good idea to follow when creating my video.

I was not familiar with the next band but 'Muse' did perform on e of their tracks.

The 'Best Hip-Hop Video' went to 'Emienem' for his come back song 'We Made You'. The video showed aspects of postmodernism as it reflected the news and events of celebrities e.g. Brett Micheal's show Rock of Love, Jesscia Simpson's weight gain and issues around Kim Kardashian.

The votes have been counted and verified and I can now announce the winner of 'Best Newcomer' goes to ... (drum role please) ... (wait for it) ... 'Lady Gaga'. Gaga really deserved this award as she has released four tracks from her album each with different videos which are amazing.

The risk taker of the show was Pink when she performed her track Sober. It would have been good if she had won an award whether it be for 'Funhouse, Sober, Please Don't Leave or So What' Just like Gaga each video is designed differently.

About time she got an award. 'Beyonce' received an award for 'Video Of The Year' for the amazing song 'Single Ladies'. This was well deserved. She makes amazing videos.

The moment we have all been waiting for. The arrival of 'Jay-Z'. He sure did make an entrance as the cameras followed his every move from getting out the car to the stage. I must admit the performance was amazing with a hint of Alicia Keys in the chorus. 'Empire State Of Mind' a good collaboration of two great artists.

The final performance was a trailer of MJ's 'This Is It Tour'

The VMA's was a good show see you next year hopefully with Justin Timberlake and many more artists/bands.

100 Greatest Hits - Half Way

*NOT ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

61 - Smack My Bitch - 1997 - based on the directors evening in Copenhagen. This can be seen as a controversial video due to the aspects of ladism portrayed in the video. American supermarkets stopped stocking the song in their stores.

58 - The Cure - Closest To Me - 1985. Good use of props to visualise/illustrate the sounds created.

57 - Meat Loaf - I'll Do Anything For Love - 1993 - Representing Beauty and the Beast

56 - Eminem - Without Me - 2002 - White Rap Artist. Different from So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds

55 - Fat Boy Slim - Praise You - Video is crated in a hidden camera effect. The music video follows a group of peole as they dance in the middle of a shopping centre.

53 - Wham - Club Tropicana. This video shocked audiences as they did not know they George Michael was gay.

Research - Girl Bands

I have asked a band from Unsigned.com called 4Flava to use their track/song 'Untouchabled' to create our music. Due to the fact that it is a Girl Band of four, I have decided to research mainstream bands (past and present) or a similar criteria. Brief History A girl group is a popular music act featuring several young female singers who generally harmonize together. Girl groups emerged in the late 1950s as groups of young singers teamed up with behind-the-scenes songwriters and music producers to create hit singles, often featuring glossy production values and backing by top studio musicians. In later eras the girl group template would be applied to disco, R&B, and country- based formats as well as pop music.

Brief History
There are a combination of girl bands (Denstinys Child, Cheetah Girls, Misteeq, Sugababes, Girls Alound, Pussycat Dolls, The Saturdays and All Saints) that inspire in the past and today. I have look at a few of there videos. Below I have highlighted the videos that I feel I different and are ideal fir looking at ways to which I could create my music video.

Legal Documentation - Asking For The Song

In order to ensure the artists as well s Unsigned.com I have created a letter that will be sent to the artist I wish to use there track/song.

Dear Sir/Madam

My name is Aicha, I’m from London England and I’m currently studying Media at Robert Clack School. As part of the course I have been assigned a project whereby I must create a music video. I have therefore visited the Unsigned.com and was drawn to your songs. When listening to your tracks I was blown away by your creative passion and work. I strongly feel that your tracks could create amazing master piece because they are high-quality and in fact engaged various different audiences in my study group. I would like to know if I could use one of your tracks in order to create the music video. Due to the fact that I am using Unsigned.com as well as your track I will ensure that acknowledgments are made to yourself and the website. In addition I can also ensure that your song/track is for educational purposes only and will be used appropriately.

For further information about the project or any concerns you may have please do not hesitate to contact me

Hope to hear from you soon.

Stage 4 - Visit To Judge's Homes

Stage 4 Visit To Judge Homes

I think I'll call this the waiting game.We have asked a few artists if we could you there tracks. All we can do is sit and wait. If you think about it, this happens in the X-Factor the contestants have to wait and see if they are through to the live finals. This time round the judges (myself and Pui San) and waiting on the artists (contestants).

Our destiny of getting the opportunity to use there song lies in there hands and not the other way round If we don't get this there will be no final/live show ... or should I say final project.

Stage 3 - Boot Camp

Stage 3 - Boot Camp

Country and Rock Artists have been cut!

We are still trying to narrow down our choices. The reason this has taken so long is because in addition to listening to the songs we are trying to figure out what we can make of them. At the same time we are trying to find out what locations we can use, the props needed is necessary, the appropriate people to feature in the video and much more. Basically we are thinking in the world of 'Mise-en-Scene' - 'What Is In The Frame.' Most importantly we need the permission from the artist in order to use there song. I have created an e-mail I just need to send it to the artists.

Previous Years

On Friday we watched a few music videos created by students from previous years. In doing so it allowed us to understand what was good and what was not so good.

Joint at number 1st place is Videos 1 and Video 3.

Video 1 - 'Six Underground'.
Comments
'Not all the words/lyrics are in sync but when they were it looked like she was actually singing'. 'Soundtrack/song matches setting'
'Good use of special effects/transitions e.g. flashing lights, spinning'
'Good/clever use of Mise-en-Scene'.
'Excellent use of graphic match - the eye and the sunlight'.

Video 3 - 'Anyone Else But You'
Comments

'Fast transitions'.
'More lip sync needed'.
'Good use of graphic match'.
'The characters in the video looked like a couple - if they weren't a couple they made it believable'
'Good use of lyrics and Mise-en-Scene'

The next video is the best of all the not so good.

Video 2 - 'Spread Love'
Comments
'Characters face was not visible'.
'Character did not suit the role of the singer'
'Good use of instruments - drummer and guitarist'
'Well edited'
'Mis-match Mise-en-Scene - good location bat costume was to simple'
'Over the top lip sync'
'Lacks presentation'

Stage 2 - The Judges Auditions

STAGE 2: The Judges Auditions

We made some cuts in regards to the type of genre to create the music video. We decided that a Rap song maybe too difficult to lip sync to and doing a slow song will mean more emphasis on the video. By this I mean that the lyrics and visual image must compliment each other more. We are now left with a few country and rock artists. There are many more R'n'B, Hip-Hop and Pop artists in the running.

In order to make sure that we have selected the right track, our classmates have also to listened to the songs and selected a few of their favorites. This is done to ensure that we are not creating a music video because we like the tracks we have selected but suit a wide rage of audiences. In fact its like this years X-Factor auditions which take place in front of a live audience.

Our special guest judge would be Mr Johnson as he will determine whether or not our track is suitable for a music video. I guess we can call him the Simon Cowelll of the group.

Judges Comments
'I think a fast song may be a challenge but it is easier to do as you have more ideas. Don't let me put you off but a slow song is boring unless you can create a memorable video'

'The tracks you have chosen are very girl y and considering you are girls I think you could make a good job of it'

'To be honest I don't like the tracks you have chosen, they seem all the same ... how can I put it cheesy pop music. They all have the same beat/instrumental, similar voices. I think you should have a change in genre maybe Rock, Punk, Indie. Give it a go, you'll never no'.

Stage 1 - The Producers Auditions

Stage 1: The Producers Auditions

Here we go the show starts here!

As one of the producers and judge of the final outcome, I have decided to take auditions for the potential song that will be used in the music video. I am going to listen to various different tracks, artist(s) and genres and decide which song is fit for purpose. I have a few ideas in mind towards the song I would like to use however, this can all change during the auditions. I am going to listen to so many different songs that both my eyes and ears are getting tired. I have also had discussions with my fellow producer and judge Pui-San. There have been some likes and dislikes as well as agreements and disagreements because we have similar yet different tastes in music.
After a lot of deliberation we have reached our finalists

Unsigned.com Meets The X-Factor

Hello and welcome to a brand new edition on Blogger.com. Todays is an exciting day as we are going to start a new show whereby svereal differnt artist create songs/tracks in order for them to win a chace to have a music video produced my the film producers of the thriller film Stalker. Try and make a music video production company use the other blog to help you with that. Say that the other production team has also created a music production line. So sit back in your seats and be prepared for a great experience as UNSIGNED.COM MEETS THE X-FACTOR.

(AUDIENCE CLAPS AND WE GO OFF ON AN AD BREAK)

Processing

Myself an Pui-San have so many ideas in mind but don't know what music we are looking for. After looking at Newgrounds.com as well as Unsigned.com we have noticed that there are many more vocal tracks on Unsigned.com then Newgrounds.com. Therefore were are sticking to Unsigned.com.

We started looking at Unsigned.com and realise there are so many music genres and some that we haven't even heard of. We take our time to listen to the genres we haven't heard of as the will provide us fresh ideas in order to create something for an audience and not for groupies or a group of fans. This did not go down to well.

We took a break and thought about what we like to do, what we could do with the resources made available to us, possible artists/bands we could follow upon many more things.

Here was our conclusion.

Brainstorm Of Ideas

In addition we refrained from using rap music as it may be difficult to lip sync against.

Unsigned.com

As discussed, when creating the music video I have to ensure that the song/track used is not mainstream or copyrighted (due to legal reasons). After searching the web, I came across another website that provides individuals with songs they can use in their work. The website is known as Unsigned.com.

Unsigned.com is a website for unsigned artists and bands to host their mp3s/tracks/songs and get exposure. The website showcases unsigned artists, independent labels. The genre of music played on the website include Hip-Hop, R'n'B, Rap, Indie, Acoustics and many more.

If used acknowledgements would be made I the final product.

Inspiration - King Of Pop - Michael Jackson

A great leader, icon, inspiration, idol, star, inventor and possible creator/founder of pop music the one and only King Of Pop and late Michael Jackson (MJ); created a path/ led the way/made pop music what it is today.

I have decided to look at MJ because he has created many unbelievable music videos through the years and has ensured that each video is different. Whether he'd be creating a story, showing off his spectacular dance moves or creating a montage (combination of images/photos that are related or have a link) his videos defiantly stand to attention and capture audiences and fans.

Videos that demonstrate MJ's dance moves include:

  • Smooth Criminal (1987)
  • Thriller (1984)
  • Beat It (1983)

Videos that present the audience with a montage include:

  • Man In The Mirror (1988)
  • Heal The World (1991)

Videos that tell a story include:

  • Billie Jean (1982)
  • The Way You Make Me Feel (1987)
  • Leave Me Alone (1989)
  • Scream (1995)

MJ's collaborations with:

  • Paul McCartney (Say, Say, Say)
  • Chris Tucker (You Rock My World) although not a collaboration featured in this 2005 track.

MJ has performed with other amazing artist such as Akon, Briney Spears, Nysnc, Destinys Child, Fergie, Usher and many more.......

100 Graeatest Hits - Part 2

*NOT ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

89 - Smashing Pumpkins release the song Tonight Tonight in 1992

88 - I Want Love sang by Elton John (an icon to music) which focuses on Drug Addiction. Other well known songs mentioned at this position include Elton's Don't Go Breaking My Heart with KiKi Dee as well as his song I'm Still Standing ... yeah yeah yeah (I actually knew this song and was dancing along with it.

77 - When this song came on everybody was on their feet doing the dance moves. It was so funny. MC Hammer with Can't Touch This. Although this is Old Skool, it is still played at parties, raves, pubs and clubs and at the odd disco. This well known song brought dance music and baggy pants with is catchy dance moves and harem trousers. This is what I call an introduction to break dancing but also brought back the 1940's fashion.

76 - This was a song by the one and only, famous British Pop Band, The Beatles. I would like to call them the boy band, of all boy bands. In 1967 they brought about a song called The Strawberry Field.

74 - In the year 2000 as part of a new millennium, Wu Tang Clang came up with a song called Gravel Pit. How could they!!! This is not a song for a new millennium.

70 - Police - Every Breath You Take - 1983 - Black and White Images of artist singing. P-Diddy has also created a copy of the song.

64 - Bjork - Human Behaviour - 1993

100 Greatest Hits - Part 1

As part of our inspiration and research/plan of our music video we sat back, relaxed and watch a programme about the 100 Greatest Hits. In doing so this allowed us to look at both past and present music videos and simply analyse why that music made it into the charts of 100 Greatest Hits.

*NOTE ALL 100 WILL BE LISTED*

100 - This was Musical Youth with their song Pass The Dutchie (1982). Now this was the first black pop video ( and not Michael Jackson - as we all thought), due to racial problems black pop videos were kept to a minimum. Music video channels/organisations e.g. MTV did not engage in black artist/bands. However, we later find out that one man changed it all.

99 - Bronski Beat with their song Smalltown Boy (1984). One of the singers in the band (John Summerville made audiences/fans aware of homosexuality(gay relationships/couples) by creating this music video. This was a also a first. In fact it was the first gay pop video, which helped bring about artist such as Elton John, Boy George and George Michael.

97 - At number 97 we have Brimful of Asha sung by Cornershop. I actually remembered this song and couldn't believe it made the 100 Greatest Hits but I had to remember that the programme went back a few years. Listening to this track reminded me of the past summers. I must admit it was a tune. The artists Cornershop discussed this song as a creation after listening to many different records that they enjoyed.

96 - When this song came on everybody was singing along as if it was a Disney sing-a-long. This also brought back memories but I was proud it made the 100 Greatest Hits. So Solid Crew with 21 seconds (2001) brought out this track at a great moment. During this period youth crime began to escalate and the band helped to engage youths into the music industry.

Music Ideas

Prior to starting the topic I looked at a range of music videos. In order to do so I asked my fellow classmates for a few ideas of music videos they enjoyed to watch. Due to the fact that we are all individuals with different tastes I gained a wide range/selection of videos. My class teacher recommended that I look at the following:
  • The Beatles - Rain
  • Coldplay - The Scientist
  • Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
In doing so he gave me an idea to how music videos can differ in a sense that some have a storyline while others are abstract and animated. In turn one shows that artist walking back although the song is not played backwards. There is also a change in colour used in music videos over the years.

My music video that I very much enjoyed was UB40's Red Red Wine; simply because it was a random choice and I knew no one would choose it.

Conventions Of A Music Video

Although not mentioned in the brief Conventions of a Music Video need to be considered.
In order to under-go the making of the music video it is important to establish the conventions of a music video. These conventions are simply the common elements or factors that create or form the basis of a final product.
  • Storyline
  • Abstract ( no storyline)
  • Lip sync
  • Dancing
  • Singing
  • Mise-en-scene
    - Costume, Hair and Make Up
    - Props (Instruments)
    - Setting/Location
    - Lighting and Colour
    - Positioning of character (band/artist) within the frame)
  • Editing
  • Special Effects

Brief

This year as part of my Media Coursework I will produce a video promo. The promo will be for a music video and must last for up to five minutes. In addition to the music video I would also:

  • Create a website homepage for the band or artist
  • Create a cover for the videos release on DVD
  • Create a magazine ad for the DVD

In order to create this music video several aspects need to be considered. This includes:

  • What is the purpose of the video
    - Helps the lyrics make sense
    - Moves story along
    - Relates to life
    - Promotes and advertise both the artist, director, location and much more
  • How can the video be judged to be successful?
    - Money/Profits
    - Fans
    - Critics/Press/Media
    - Sale
  • What factors should be taken into consideration when planning a video?
    - Time
    - Budget
    - Money
    - Fan Base
    - Expanding band base
  • Can a pop be considered to be a genre?
There are two sides to every story, the same way there is two sides to this question. The first part of the question states that a pop IS NOT considered as a genre. This is due to the fact that pop can relate to or mean popular music. In this case popular music considers all the different genres (Indie, Rock, Classical, R 'n' B, Pop and many more) of music. In other words popular music can be seen as well known or recognised music for its audience or fans. On the other hand, Pop IS considered as a genre because it is a style or type of music that audiences as well as fans enjoy to listen to. There are several elements/attributes that form a pop song.
